Rat River Trail water issues

Post by CHOPPER 3 »

SS1 and SS6 were groomed today . There are a few hazzards on the Rat River Trail due to standing water . Coming from the Bear Creek bridge and heading toward Armstrong Creek there is a section about 150 feet long that is partially frozen over and safe for snomobiles to pass through however our equiptment stirred it up on the North side of the trail . This area has been temporarily marked on both sides with caution tape until we can get out and sign it properly tomorrow . The second area is not far from this one continuing East and North , about half a mile from Rat River Road there is an area 100 feet long that is mostly solid but has a hole on the east side that is quite deep . Snomobile traffic can pass this area also but is limited to one machine wide . Temporary field staking and caution tape outline the hazzard on both sides of the trail . If you are riding in this section please use EXTRA CAUTION . Hopefully after a few days the water will subside and freeze over . The rest of these sections look great and are rated very good .

After an inspection today, it is clear the water hazzards on the Rat River Trail have increased over night. These sections are located on the East end of the trail toward Rat River Rd. The section West of the Bear Creek bridge was easily passable yesterday afternoon by snowmobile, it isn't very deep but water has covered 80% of the trail since last night . It looks like run off from the creek is overflowing , with visible current parallel to the trail. The water hazzard to the east of Bear Creek bridge looks to be caused by the rain we had and is continuing to expand. Both of these areas have been signed wth hazzard markers and caution tape ahead of them . Depending on temperature and traffic this weekend these areas may worsen. We will not be able to groom this section until temperatures cooperate and will be grooming down to Rat River road before turning back to Armstrong Creek. Please use extra caution and do not ride beyond your comfort level.
