Ice Thickness

Post by 05FireCat600SP »

Anyone know what some of the area lakes have for ice thickness? This weekend is free fishing weekend and was hoping to try a little ice fishing.

My Take on Ice Thickness, ice thickness cannot be accurately reported because too many factors influence it. For example; shallow bays with little or no water exchange may have 8” of ice when other areas may be open or have as little as a 1/2” of ice. These irregularities can exist within a few feet of each other, a shallow cove can have thick ice and a deeper “hole” in that cove could have just froze over and have less than an inch of ice. Then throw in the effect of springs and creeks, locations of springs which routinely change from year to year, water flow in and out from creeks can change by the day, these all have huge effects on ice thickness.

There’s only one thing consistent about ice, it’s that anytime you’re on it you’re at risk.

well said "97911" , My response would be 0 to 12" , about the time you tell someone how much ice, it would come back to haunt you.
